How to choose football boots
Start with the surface you play on most. FG (firm ground) boots are made for natural grass, AG boots for 3G artificial pitches and TF (turf) for short astroturf and five-a-side.
Then pick the family that suits your game: speed boots (Nike Mercurial, adidas F50), control boots (Nike Phantom, adidas Predator) or touch boots (Nike Tiempo, adidas Copa).
Elite, Pro or Academy?
Each boot comes in several tiers. Elite models use the brand's best materials. Pro models keep the same shape for a much lower price, and Academy/League versions are entry-level.
Last season's Elite colourways are often the best deal: same technology, far below launch price.
FAQ
What's the difference between FG and AG boots?
FG soleplates have longer bladed studs for natural grass. AG soleplates use more, shorter studs designed for 3G artificial pitches, which reduces grip stress on your joints.
When do football boots go on sale?
Prices usually drop when a new colourway or 'pack' is released, which happens several times a season. Older colourways of the same model are then discounted.
Should I buy football boots a size up?
Usually not: football boots should fit snugly. Take your normal size in the same brand and check the retailer's size guide, as fit varies between models.
