Most grassroots football in Europe is now played on 3G and artificial pitches, yet plenty of players still wear boots made for natural grass. The right AG (artificial ground) boot gives you better grip, less strain on your knees and ankles, and a longer life for the boots themselves.
Below are the best AG boots available right now, grouped by the type of player you are, from top-of-the-range elite boots down to options around €100. Want to see every model? Browse all artificial grass boots.

AG, FG or TF: which soleplate do you need?
The soleplate matters more than the colourway. Here's the short version:
- FG (firm ground): made for natural grass. On artificial turf, the longer bladed studs can grip too hard and the soleplate wears out quickly.
- AG (artificial ground): more numerous, shorter and often hollow studs that spread pressure across the foot. This is the one for 3G pitches with rubber crumb.
- FG/AG or MG (multi-ground): a compromise if you play on both surfaces every week.
- TF (turf): small rubber studs for old-style, short-pile astroturf and five-a-side.
Tip: Nike labels its premium artificial-grass soleplate AG-PRO; adidas simply uses AG. They do the same job.
Best AG boots for speed
Nike Mercurial Vapor 17 Elite AG-PRO
The newest Mercurial Vapor is built around a super-light Atomknit upper and a very thin FlyLite plate, both designed to keep weight down and your foot close to the ball. It keeps a classic laced fit, which many players still prefer for lockdown at high speed.
Who it's for: wingers and strikers who rely on acceleration and want the lightest possible feel on 3G.
adidas F50 Elite Laceless AG
A previous-generation elite F50 at well below its original price. The laceless Primeknit construction moulds to the shape of your foot, so there's very little break-in time.
Who it's for: fast players who want elite-level materials without paying launch prices.
Best AG boots for control
Nike Phantom 6 Elite Low Cut AG-PRO
Erling Haaland's boot line. The Phantom 6 uses a Gripknit upper with a micro-texture in the strike zone, so the ball sticks to your foot when you pass, shoot or receive under pressure, even in the wet.
Who it's for: playmakers and strikers who want grip on the ball more than pure lightness.
adidas Predator Elite Fold-over Tongue AG
The Predator is the classic striker's boot. Rubber grip elements on the upper add bite when you strike the ball, and the Powerspine gives extra midfoot stability for a cleaner shot. The fold-over tongue is a nod to the original Predators.
Who it's for: anyone who takes the free kicks, or wants extra bite on long passes and shots.
Best AG boots for touch (leather feel)
adidas Copa Pure IV Elite Laceless AG
A premium fusion-skin leather upper with 3D prints for a soft feel and extra ball grip, plus an Ortholite insole for comfort over 90 minutes. It's the boot Declan Rice is associated with.
Who it's for: midfielders and defenders who want comfort and a classic touch.
Nike Tiempo Maestro Elite AG-PRO
Nike's touch boot, worn by players such as Musiala and Foden. The soft TechLeather upper gives a glove-like fit and, according to Nike, 17% more coverage than the previous model.
Who it's for: dribblers who want the most premium touch boot available on AG.
Best mid-range AG boots
The "Pro" tier sits just below elite: similar shape and looks, slightly simpler materials, and a much friendlier price.
Kylian Mbappé's boot line with Air Zoom cushioning in the forefoot for a springy feel, and a FlyWeave upper for a snug fit. The high-cut collar of the Superfly is a matter of taste: try it if you like a sock-like feel around the ankle.
A lightweight Haloskin+ upper with a grip coating and laces, in a regular fit. A solid all-round speed boot for weekly matches.
Best budget AG boots
A real cow-leather forefoot on a multi-surface FG/AG soleplate. It's a great pick if you switch between grass and 3G, and leather boots like this tend to last.
The previous Mercurial Vapor, with a 3/4-length Air Zoom unit and a Gripknit/Atomknit/Flyknit upper. Elite-level tech for the price of a mid-range boot.
The smart buy: elite boots from the previous collection often drop to mid-range prices when new colourways arrive. If you don't need the latest colour, that's where the best value is. See every AG boot on sale.
FAQ
Can I wear FG boots on artificial grass?
You can, but it isn't ideal. FG studs are designed to sink into natural grass; on 3G they can grip too much, put extra stress on your joints and wear the soleplate faster. Some brands also exclude FG boots used on artificial grass from their warranty.
Are AG-PRO and AG the same?
Yes, functionally. AG-PRO is Nike's name for its premium artificial-ground soleplate; adidas uses AG.
What about astroturf or five-a-side?
For short, sandy or older carpet pitches, TF (turf) boots with small rubber studs are a better choice than AG.
Do AG boots fit the same as FG?
The upper is usually identical, so take your normal size in the same model. Fit can vary between models (laceless boots in particular), so check the retailer's size guide before ordering.
